WIG/DECC Workshop: Emissions and energy scenario planning up to 2050

24 September 2010

On 24th September, WIG held a joint workshop with the Department for Energy & Climate Change (DECC).

In recent months, DECC has been working with stakeholders from across business, academia and the third sector to explore different approaches to decarbonisation to enable the UK to meet its greenhouse gas emissions targets and maintain energy security.

They have published a 2050 Pathway Analysis in which they have developed six different energy demand and supply and greenhouse gas emission scenarios up to 2050 using a calculator they have developed. DECC has launched a call for evidence and is asking stakeholders for their views. Further details are at:

The joint workshop gave WIG members an opportunity to hear more about the 2050 Pathway Analysis and for DECC to receive input from business in support of their call for evidence. Ravi Gurumurthy, Director, Strategy at DECC introduced the 2050 Pathways Analysis in the context of the government’s policies on energy and climate change. Jan Ole Kiso, Senior Policy Advisor presented the different scenarios of the 2050 Pathway Analysis and explained some of the assumptions behind them.

The presentations were followed by facilitated round table sessions at which attendees provided input into the scenarios outlined, and had the opportunity to discuss and assess the implications for industry.
