Attachments, secondments, interchange and mentoring schemes

Secondments and attachments are where the Whitehall & Industry Group (WIG) began in 1984, and they’re still a mainstay of WIG’s activities.

This is for the simple reason that they work. In 25 years, we have yet to hear from someone who hasn’t gained from their time in a different sector. Full-time, part-time, long-term or short-term, they offer practical opportunities to build understanding, share expertise and establish networks, providing lasting benefits to individuals and organisations

WIG recognises that secondments are not the answer for all. Job commitments and time demands rule them out for some WIG members, which is why we developed cross-sector mentoring a few years ago - providing a different means to the same invaluable end: hands-on experience of business in another sector.

All these cross-sector programmes provide a platform for:

• individuals to meet specific learning and development needs;
• organisations to tap into high calibre skills or gain a fresh perspective from another sector;

In all cases, we pride ourselves on making the right match that will benefit both the individuals concerned and their organisations.

Short-term attachments:

These tend to be carried out on a part-time basis, ranging from 15-20 days up to a three-month period. The flexibility means you can carry on with the day job whilst swiftly gaining an insight into another sector.

Long-term secondments:

WIG long-term secondments provide a unique insight into another way of working, and can typically last for between 4 months and a year.

Interchange schemes:

Many organisations are now looking for secondment and interchange programmes structured to help deliver key business goals. WIG works with them to achieve this by immersing a group of their high potential managers in a range of cross-sector activities designed to develop specific competencies.

Mentoring scheme:

This scheme has been devised to help managers meet business and individual challenges by establishing one-to-one mentoring partnerships with an experienced leader from another sector.
