Lawyers Network Breakfast Briefing: Richard Alderman, Director, Serious Fraud Office

As the current economic recession continues to bite, the temptation for some to commit fraudulent activity or misrepresent their financial affairs can rise. However, as more and more businesses fail, the likelihood of such activity being exposed increases.

The Serious Fraud Office (SFO), an independent agency set up 21 years ago to investigate such fraudulent activity has seen a dramatic rise in its recent caseload and history would suggest this is inevitably going to increase in the current climate.

Pressure on the government to deal with this domestic and international crime, set against a series of deep budget cuts, will present a significant challenge for the Agency in 2009.

Hosted by DLA Piper and featuring a short introduction by Robert Wardle, a Consultant in its Corporate Crime & Investigations Team (and former Director of the SFO), the briefing will allow Richard Alderman the opportunity address some of the key developments in this field including:

  • The UK recession and its impact on fraudulent activity
  • Current trends and statistics
  • The SFO’s framework and policy agenda
  • The impact of budgetary cuts on the department and what this will mean for its workload
  • Topical cases such as the recent investigations of Bernard Madoff and Sir Allen Stanford
  • Challenges and developments on the horizon

There will be ample opportunity for questions and answers enabling delegates to feed back issues to the Serious Fraud Office and extended networking after the briefing.
