Sir Mark Sedwill, National Security Adviser
About the speaker
Mark Philip Sedwill CMG was appointed National Security Adviser to the Prime Minister in April 2017.
Joining the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1989, Mark has been held a number of high profile positions, including as Ambassador to Afghanistan in 2009, and as NATO’s Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan in 2010. He also served as Political Director in 2012, as the Prime Minister’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan in 2011.
Most recently, Mark held the position of Permanent Secretary at the Home Office from February 2013 until April 2017. Mark was educated at the University of St Andrews, where he graduated as a Bachelor of Science. He was later awarded a Masters in Philosophy from the University of Oxford. He is married with one daughter
