Sir Richard Heaton, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice

Sir Richard Heaton is the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Justice. In this briefing he will discuss:

  • Some of the key challenges for the department, and how they are delivering their 4 strategic priorities, namely; a prison and probation service that reforms offenders, a modern courts and justice system, a Global Britain that promotes the rule of law, and a transformed department that is simpler, smarter and more unified.
  • How the MoJ has been preparing for Brexit and the impact it will have on the department.


About the Speaker

Sir Richard Heaton KCB has been Permanent Secretary for MOJ since August 2015. Before that he was Permanent Secretary for the Cabinet Office (from August 2012).

Sir Richard started his career as a barrister, and joined the Home Office as a legal adviser in 1991. He then worked in legal teams across government, focussing particularly on criminal law, the constitution, and human rights law.
