    Lord Nick Macpherson served as the Permanent Secretary to the Treasury from 2005 to 2016. He managed the department through the financial crisis which began in 2007.  Prior to this, Nick held various positions in the Treasury, including Principal Private Secretary to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Director of Welfare Reform, head of the Public Services Directorate and head of the Budget and Public Finance Directorate. He first joined the Treausry in1985. In 2016, Nick was nominated for a crossbench peerage in David Cameron's 2016 resignation Honours and joined the House of Lords in 4 October 2016.
