View from the Board: Sir John Parker, Chairman, Anglo American

The majority (70-80%) of Anglo American’s operational footprint is in emerging economy countries many of which face political, governance and social challenges. Sir John Parker, Chairman, Anglo America will talk about the role of the Chairman and Board of such a company in ensuring that we manage both to meet the best international standards and operate effectively on the ground.

He will discuss the multiple levels of corporate accountability eg via the Sustainability and Audit Committees and the challenge of ensuring that local risks are identified as part of our internal risk management system. Beyond that he will look at the importance of protecting corporate reputation and how in a less certain political world, business needs to show wider leadership and build trust in their ability to offer society a demonstrable and sustainable “fair deal”.
