We were delighted to welcome Sir James Bevan to discuss the role of regulation in tackling climate change and environmental degradation, and share reflections on the future of environmental regulation in the UK.

The Environment Agency is the regulator responsible for implementing environmental regulations, covering a wide range of business sectors and some of the key government priorities such as water, flooding, planning and tackling the energy crisis. In doing this work it aims to create better places for people and wildlife, and support sustainable development.

The basis of most of the environmental regulation in the UK can be found in retained EU law. Now the UK has left the EU there is the opportunity to rethink how we do regulation in this country and to have a regulatory system that delivers better environmental outcomes at lower transaction cost. Sir James Bevan, Chief Executive of the Environment Agency will talk about the role of regulation in tackling climate change and environmental degradation, and share reflections on the future of environmental regulation in the UK.

Sir James has been Chief Executive of the Environment Agency since November 2015 after a long career in government.

Speakers at the Event

Sir James Bevan joined the Environment Agency (EA) as Chief Executive in late November 2015. As Chief Executive, he is the leader of the EA and is responsible for the day to day management of the organisation.

Sir James has had a long career in government. His previous roles include: UK High Commissioner to India; Chief Operating Officer, UK Foreign Office; and Visiting Fellow, Center for International Affairs, Harvard. He has also held a number of senior posts in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office including posts in Washington, Paris and Brussels.

Sir James has a BA Honours in Social Anthropology from the University of Sussex. He was made a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) in 2006 and was awarded a Knighthood in 2012. Sir James was also awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Sussex University in 2012.
