In 2021, Parliament passed the National Security and Investment Act. The legislation allows the government to scrutinise and intervene in certain acquisitions made by businesses and investors that could be deemed to harm the UK’s national security. It includes the legal requirement to tell government about acquisitions of certain entities in 17 sensitive areas of the economy (called ‘notifiable acquisitions’). This includes areas of the economy from artificial intelligence to data infrastructure to transport.

Implementation of the act is being led by a specialised team in BEIS. Questions have been raised by private sector about how this legislation may be applied and what it could mean for investment in the UK economy given the large amount of sectors covered.

Join us online for this session to:

  • Understand how the National Security and Investment Act is being applied
  • Learn more about where BEIS are working across the private sector to ensure the department is supporting security, while also ensuring it isn’t a deterrent for investment
  • Get thoughts from the private sector on how to make sure the approach is collaborative and beneficial for the UK economy and security
