Report Industrial Strategy Council Approaches To The Uks Sectoral Landscape

Theme(s)

Economic growth and prosperity

The Industrial Strategy Council is tasked with providing impartial and expert evaluation of the government’s progress in delivering the aims of the Industrial Strategy. The Industrial Strategy White Paper recognised that economy-wide perspectives on productivity and economic growth can miss the diversity that exists between sectors and firms This has become all the more apparent when assessing the impact of Covid-19 on different areas of the economy.

With that in mind, the Industrial Strategy Council is publishing two reports examining sectoral aspects of the Industrial Strategy. A report into effective policy approaches considers how we can implement sectoral policy in a way that works for both the public and private sector. This is also supported by an evidence review of the UK's sectoral landscape, including key aspects of the UK’s sectoral composition and an analysis of differences in economic conditions and productivity drivers across UK sectors.

In this special session we will:

  • Discuss the diversity of the sectoral landscape, differences in economic conditions and how to tailor government policy to the needs of individual sectors
  • Evaluate how to implement sectoral policy effectively, and get views on the Industrial Strategy’s Sector Deals and Grand Challenges
  • Establish how the sectors should, and can, work more effectively with policymakers to ensure a bespoke approach is taken to help support in Covid-19 recovery
